Martin has been a chartered architect since 1991 and a Partner with Liverpool based practice Brock Carmichael since 2003. He has also been involved in developing the practices business in China and is a director of the Octagon Partnership, a unique collaboration between Brock Carmichael and the Oval Partnership with offices in London, Hong Kong, Cape Town and Beijing.
Martin’s expertise covers education, community/social enterprise, mixed use/city centre residential, master planning and design management. He also led the multi-disciplinary design team that delivered the £70million One Park West designed by Cesar Pelli as part of the Liverpool One development
Martin believes construction is a social process and architects are in a unique position as to act as facilitators and enablers bringing value to this process. He also leads the practices development in the use of offsite manufacturing and has recently been working with OSCO Home’s production engineers and supply chain in developing a flexible panelised system for social housing that could be manufactured using local pop-up factories.
Martin combines private practice with academia. In 2013 he gained an MSt in Interdisciplinary design from the University of Cambridge and participated in the 2012 IDBE CEM Cambridge Union debate successfully arguing against the motion, ‘This house believes regulation stifles innovation’.
In 2013 Martin was awarded an honorary citation at the 10th Chinese Urban Housing Conference in Shanghai for his academic paper on displaced communities. He is also co-author of a collaborative paper on the socio economic values and psychological aspects of sustaining displaced communities presented at the 2014 International Union of Architects World Congress in Durban, South Africa.
Martin is currently leading the team that has been shortlisted for the Tristan da Cunha RIBA International Design Competition to develop a sustainable self-reliant community.
He holds a part time post of Associate Adjunct Professor at the Centre for Housing Innovation within the Chinese University of Hong Kong; is a committee member of the Liverpool Architectural Society and a Freeman of the City of London through his membership of the City of London Livery, Worshipful Company of Constructors.
